Landscape design in Barrhaven

Barrhaven is the clearest example in Ottawa of a landscape market defined by builder-grade starting conditions. Houses in Half Moon Bay, Longfields, Stonebridge and Chapman Mills were handed over with a thin layer of topsoil over compacted clay subfill, sod laid on it, a graded swale along the property line and nothing else. Almost every project here starts by importing soil.

The swale is the local constraint that catches people. These subdivisions were graded to an approved drainage plan, and the swale between two houses is part of it. Raising a bed, building a shed or adding fill in that line is exactly what the City's guide prohibits, and in Barrhaven the lots are close enough together that a blocked swale puts water against a neighbour's foundation within one melt.

Lot proportions here favour a particular design. Rear yards are wide but shallow, so the useful move is usually a broad patio across the back of the house rather than a deep garden, with planting used to screen the neighbours rather than to fill space. Side yards are narrow, which means machine access to the rear is often possible only from the corner lot or through a removed fence panel, and that should be priced at the quote.

Barrhaven is also new enough that street trees are young and small, so the City tree critical root zone rarely constrains work here the way it does inside the Greenbelt. The trade-off is no shade for fifteen years, which makes tree selection in the front yard the single highest-value decision on most of these lots.
