Narrow lots, mature trees and limited rear access can shape the design in the Glebe and Old Ottawa South. Measure the actual property and access route rather than assuming a typical lot size; discuss delivery, excavation and storage space before work is priced.
Restricted access can affect labour, equipment and the overall price. Ask the contractor to assess the site and itemize access-related costs in the written quote before deciding how materials and equipment will reach the work area.
Mature trees are an important part of these neighbourhoods. Confirm ownership and current protection requirements with the City and an arborist before changing levels, excavating or planning machine access near roots. Include the protection plan in the construction sequence.
Design responses that work here are consistent: permeable or open-jointed paving so rain still reaches tree roots, raised beds built without changing the grade around a trunk, shade planting rather than lawn, and vertical screening instead of hedging that needs width. Old foundations are often stone or block rather than poured concrete, so grading and drainage work against the house needs a gentler hand than a 1990s wall would tolerate.
